2008 Collection

My inspiration for this collection came out of a visit to the house-museum of esoteric collector and architect Sir John Soane in London.

Adding my own personal touch from the symbols and objects that I saw there, I have created the following collection.

I’ve tried to capture the baroque aura contained within that place full of symbolism by creating an aesthetic reality conveyed through differently printed tapestry fabrics, which draw upon Dadaist volumes, set against mesh masks of Greek origin and using florescent metallic catsuits, giving the impression of a hieratical attitude, reminiscent of the marble busts I saw there.

I have tried to express, using different fabrics, the emotions of joy and sadness, fable and moral as concepts from romantic surrealism.

Like a game, the garments seem to be household objects that come to life if you touch them and pronounce the magical words, as in the film Return to Oz.

So, to sum up, this has been a handcrafted project of chance and impulsiveness, trial and error, and I hope I have been able to capture Sir John’s ideas contained within the fantastic, unreal worlds and strange creatures that are on view within the museum; where Greece meets England, classical meets contemporary and many other opposites embrace.
